Christmas Poem 2024: The Disappearance Holiday

I cannot feel the usual holiday
Christmas within my heart is gone, apparently.
Did the Election kill it? What is wrong?
I’m used to feeling Christmas in my heart.
All I need do is look. Or listen. Then
it’s like big sky in me . . . begins to dawn.
That’s how I find the God within my heart.
Wherever I be, I’ll find sacredness
and carry God within me all day long.
Now, climate’s changing. Weather has turned weird.
People are changing too. Some have turned proud.
I could find a cruel ugliness to fear.
I could despair. This I refuse to do
while breath is in my body.
Suddenly
The worry in my chest, my legs, my face —
Near-crying — gentles down. A wonder place
Begins to open up. All on its own.
I sink down, on my knees. Because, because
God never left God’s throne of Everywhere.
Christmas and every day, God’s in my heart.
That means I’ll offer little Christmas gifts
to friends and seeming strangers. All year long:
At minimum, a word * a smile * a listen.
I’ll find a simple way of giving back.
That’s far more interesting than giving up.

And yes, you’re invited to share today’s poem. And recording. All I ask is that you specifically attribute this poem to the author. Also, include the url for this Christmas Poem 2024.
BTW, for extra fun, you can contrast the poet’s reading of this poem with a clever mechanical alternative. Here on Medium. Go ahead. Listen to that “performance” just like an audiobook.
