To start, let’s talk tulips. Around here, in Northern Virginia, spring means bright red tulips on my lawn. Already we’ve had purple crocuses, then fragrant hyacinths, and what a great poet once called “a host of golden daffodils.” Probably William Wordsworth implied “a heavenly host of golden daffodils.”

If you’re fortunate enough to have your own garden, it can be delightful. While if you don’t have a garden of your own, it can be at least as delightful… since you can observe other folks’ gardens — just as much beauty and none of the work.

Back to the topic of tulips, spring flowers delight us with a more sophisticated garden experience than we can get from mere lawns. And yet, what if you were a visiting anthropologist from Mars? You might think the real stars of any lawn were the golden dandelions, already spreading in profusion. Other “flowers” are blossoming too, like the enthusiastically spreading ones with purple tops and also the wild-and-wacky sprongy things.

Forgive me, but I haven’t learned their horticultural names. To me, these are weeds.

Your New Clarity May Include Spotting Differences

Such as weeds versus flowers.

Granted, in the case of gardens, why not take the easy route? For instance, like my next-door neighbor. Because Neighbor Gladys hasn’t weeded her garden in the past 30 years. Yet her lawn is covered with a very colorful crop o’ weeds.

Were we simply talking gardens, you could find beauty either way. But have you guessed yet, Blog-Buddies?
