“Think Things Through”
I have certainly encountered the expectation at work that I will sit in a meeting and “think things through”. It was only in sessions with you, Rose, that I found out what an unhelpful and even dangerous thing this is to do.
My Simple Alternative to “Think Things Through”
Now, my approach is to speak spontaneously in meetings.
Also, I take notes as needed.
What if there’s anything I can’t answer on the spot? Then I let people know I will get back to them. It’s so much simpler! And I think it makes me more effective.
Just Because Others Say Jump Doesn’t Mean I Must Jump
I still have much to learn about doing things my way.
Meanwhile I’m so glad to not be twisting myself into knots. When I don’t give permission to do multiple things at once, I don’t have to.
Doing multiple things at once means not doing any of them well.

I’m Encountering People with Shredded Consciousness. Tragic!
Besides Enlightenment Coaching from Rose for me personally, there’s more. I have also had a personal session where she researched big multi-taskers where I work. Twice, Rose researched chakra databanks of different colleagues of mine.
- I supplied screenshots from meetings. Perfect for aura research!
- Both these colleagues are living in a way that can lead to Shredded Consciousness. If not there already.
One of them was my manager. Manager Gladys is a knowledge worker. Once she had a reputation for being brilliant. Now her contributions are …. not what they were.

Busywork Does Not Equate to Brillance
Manager Gladys has taught me about that, in a painful way. She seems to be always so, so busy, trying to do 20 things at the same time.
- I’ve watched her be on two phone calls at once
- While still checking email
- And answering chat messages,
- And also talking to people in the room.
It’s hard to have a straightforward conversation with her.
I am concerned that for many, multitasking is now seen as a sign of professionalism. Being able to handle the pace, the workload.

Just Say No
What is my approach at work now, when asked to multi-task? I don’t do it, avoiding this as much as possible.
I have seen the consequences for others doing it. That has been a warning to me.

I am fortunate that in recent years I have not been asked to multitask very often. And when I am, I push back.

For example, as much as I can, given the situation and context, no!
I ignore any chat messages that come in during a meeting.

So What If Other People Prefer this Nonsense?
In a recent meeting I was running, some of the attendees started writing in the chat:
- Messages,
- Comments
- And questions
I have not yet found a way to completely disable this feature in the software. Towards the end of the meeting, Sam (one attendee) pointed out that I wasn’t responding to chats.
That meeting had been a little fraught. We were discussing future changes. Some participants found that upsetting.

No Apologies, You Kidding?
Did I apologize for NOT Multi-Tasking while I ran that meeting?
Hardly! So what if Sam seemed to expect that, when he complained that I wasn’t responding to chats. Politely but firmly I said:
“Oh no, I was too busy talking and listening to everyone to pay attention to that.”
How Else Did I Respond to the Demand? Did I Let Sam Force Me to Chat?
No!

Who Was Running the Rest of that Meeting, Him or Me?
Guess, Readers.
I proceeded to continue ignoring chat questions and comments. Instead, I told the attendees they could ask me their questions at this point.
It’s not ideal, but was the best thing I could come up with on the spot.

My New Strategy for Meetings in the Future
My plan is to tell people some ground rules. At the start of meetings I am running, the chat functionality is not to be used for questions or comments.
Participants can raise their hand if they want to speak. I will get to those questions, within the framework of the meeting as planned.

Also, I’m Helping Others to Avoid Multi-Tasking Pressures
When I run a meeting, I also speak up for other members of the team, if they are asked to multitask. For example, GARNET recently commented on what happened to her with this kind of pressure. And what she did about it. (See Comments #138 and following.)
Regarding the work I am responsible for, I design it in a way that avoids multitasking.
For example, if I’m giving a presentation, particularly to a large group, I ask people at the start to hold their questions until the end. Write them down, preferably!
I got this idea from a session with you, Rose, and it works great. Also I really like HENRY’S suggestion for recording detailed training sessions. (See his Comments #166 and following at that same blogpost where GARNET contributed.)
